LORD PARSHURAM
Lord Parshuram was one of the ten
incarnations of Lord Vishnu who is also one of the eight immortals as per Hindu
texts. As per the Hindu scriptures all the immortals are waiting for the tenth
incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is also known as Ram with an axe.
Lord Parshuram was born to Sage
Jamadagni and his Kshatriya wife Renuka. They were living in a hut and have a
celestial cow Surabhi (daughter of cow Kamdhenu). Surabhi gave them all what
they desire. According to Padma Purana once the King Kartavirya Arjuna
came to know about the cow and asked Jamadagni to give it to him, sage refuses.
The King took it by force and when the sage tried to stop him, the king beat
him with his fist and killed him. Lord Parshuram came to know about the crime
and challenges the king for fight, he killed the king and won the war.
There after to maintain the
balance on earth he performed Ashvamedha Sacrifice and
killed every member of Kshatriyas. He believed that Kshatriya clan started
misusing their power and kinship that’s why he started killing them all to maintain
the equilibrium on earth.
In legends it is believed that
Parshuram was responsible for origin of west coast. Once he threw his battle
axe in the sea because of which western coast arose. It is believed that Salher
fort was the place from where he threw his battle axe in the river, it is still
the highest fort in Maharashtra and second highest peak in Maharashtra.
As per Keralolpathi, a 17th
century Malayalam work the land of Kerala was recovered from the sea by a
warrior who is holding Axe and known as Parshuram, 6th incarnation
of Lord Vishnu. That is the reason Kerala is also called “The land of Parshuram.”
A number of temples are dedicated
to Lord Parshuram in the west coast region. Specially the region between
Madgaon and Mangalore known as Konkan region is highly dedicated to Lord
Parshuram.
He was born in Treta yuga for a
sole purpose of maintaining the equilibirium on earth when the higher class
start misusing their powers. He killed Sahasrabahu and all other kings in
battle with his axe. He was present during the reign of Lord Rama and confronts
him over Lord Shiva’s broken bow.
He was also present in Dwapar
Yuga to hand over the Sudarshana chakra to Lord Krishna who is 8th
incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He had a major role in Dwapar Yuga as he was the
Guru of Bhisma, Drona, Karna.
